Maintaining Healthy and Repairing Damaged Hair

Maintaining Healthy Hair

An ounce of prevention is better than a ton of treatment, or 13 simple tips of Marlin Sherlock, Director of the British Institute of Trichologists.

Wash your hair regularly using a good quality shampoo followed by a good conditioner.

Avoid too many chemical treatments.

If you color your hair yourself, follow manufacturer’s directions and test the color on a small strand.  If it works all right, you don’t have to repeat it.

Avoid direct sunlight.

Always shampoo after swimming.

Get a professional trim or haircut regularly.  If you grow your hair, trimming the ends once every six weeks will prevent split ends.

Never use the highest heat setting of your dryer; keep the dryer some distance away from hair when drying.

Long hair needs special care because it is older.

Wash long hair tilting your head backwards (just like in a salon) or in a shower to avoid tangling.

After shampooing and applying a conditioner, use a wide-toothed comb to spread it evenly all over wet hair.

Bleaching, coloring, or perming slightly changes hair structure.  Even short hair needs conditioning to stay healthy.

Short hair not treated chemically also requires conditioning as a protective or beautifying measure.

Remember, don’t wait until your hair is damaged.  Prevent problems by conditioning your hair after every shampooing or your life will get harder.
