Casino Owner: Cabaret Discusses My Life

khaled el.sawy

Having been silent for too long, Mohsen Gaafar, owner of celebrated Al Leil (Night) Casino in Al Haram has decided to speak out on Cabaret (showing since June). Cabaret, says Gaafar, is in fact a close account of his life. Gaafar has confirmed he is not going to file a lawsuit against Al Sobky Company, producer, director, or Salah Abdullah, who acts as the character based on him.

Al Leil is known to have been owned by diva Sherifa Fadel. In fact, Al Leil was a landmark of Egypt 1970’s and 1980’s exciting nightlife. As Fadel grew older and older, her husband Aly Zaki (an army general) paralyzed, Fadel decided to lease Al Leil in order to nurse her husband until he recovered.

However, her husband’s illness was a prolonged one. Back then, director Samir Khafagy proposed to buy and turn Al Leil into a United Artists Troupe Theater showing plays starring comedian Adel Imam. Fadel asked leasers to evacuate but they did not. As a last resort, she filed a lawsuit until she won. Many rushed after Al Leil after court’s ruling but Gaafar managed to land a win sales contract.

Cabaret is written by Ahmed Abdullah, directed by Samed Abdel Aziz and stars: Jumana Murad, Khaled Saleh, Donya Samir Ghanem, Salah Abdullah, May Kassab, Ahmed Bedair and Ranya Youssef. So far, Cabaret has turned 6 million Egyptian pounds, outstripping Lailat Al Baby Doll whose yield (5 million Egyptian pounds) falls much lower than production and promotion costs (45 million Egyptian pounds).
