Patrick Watson as inventive as ever
In typical defiance of convention, the name Patrick Watson refers not to a solo artist but to a four-piece Canadian rock group led by the singer of the same name. Three years after the huge critical success of "Close to Paradise", the group is back with a new, highly-anticipated album, "Wooden Arms".
This follow-up is even more ambitious, showing that the group has not been resting on its laurels. We do of course still find the stuff the band made its name on: subtle, ethereal melodies lifted by complex, unusual rhythms. On the single "Tracy's Water", Patrick Watson offer us the refreshing new idea of tinkling with glass bottles. Meanwhile, on the magnificent "Beijing", the turning of bicycle wheels can be heard.
On the downside, in spite of its undeniable inventiveness, "Wooden Arms" could benefit from a bit more gusto.
